About Aikido
Q. Who is Aikido suitable for?
Aikido is ideal for those who want to strengthen their mind and body, improve interpersonal skills, or develop self-defense abilities. Since there are no competitions, anyone can continue regardless of age, build, or fitness level. About half of our members are women, and many beginners and seniors are also active members.
Q. What makes Aikido enjoyable?
There’s a great sense of fulfillment when you and your training partner execute a technique in perfect harmony. Over time, you’ll also notice Aikido principles enhancing your daily life. Many members report improved posture and a better understanding of how to use their body.
Q. Will I learn to defend myself?
Yes. Aikido techniques are applied in police arrest methods in Japan, making it practical for self-defense. Beyond controlling an opponent, you’ll naturally develop a sense of “maai” (distancing) that helps you avoid dangerous situations altogether.
Q. Can Aikido help improve my interpersonal skills?
Through training, you develop the perspective of (1) understanding yourself, (2) understanding your partner, and (3) harmonizing with others. When executing or receiving techniques, your natural tendencies in dealing with people become apparent. This self-awareness can lead to improved communication in everyday life.
For First-Timers
Q. Is it okay to come to a trial lesson alone?
Yes, most people come to trial lessons on their own. New faces join regularly, so you won’t feel out of place at all. Our instructors and staff will guide you every step of the way.
Q. I’m worried about getting injured
We prioritize safety at all times. We start by carefully teaching ukemi (safe falling techniques) and progress to technique practice step by step. No forceful techniques are applied. We also carry sports insurance for added peace of mind. Our Gentle Pace Class places extra emphasis on safety.
Q. Are there separate changing rooms for men and women?
Yes, the Shinagawa dojo has separate changing rooms for men and women. The Kamakura dojo (Yuigahama Osteopathic Clinic) also has changing areas. We maintain clean facilities so you can feel comfortable.
Q. What age groups attend?
Our members range from elementary school children to those in their 70s. The general class is primarily made up of people in their 20s to 50s, with about half being women. Many members in their 60s and 70s attend the Gentle Pace Class. Many people in their 40s and 50s have started martial arts for the first time here, so there’s no need to worry about age.
Enrollment & Trial Lessons
Q. I haven’t exercised at all. Can I keep up?
Yes, you can. We proceed at your own pace while being mindful of injury prevention. Many of our members started with zero exercise experience. We also have many female members in their 40s and 50s who took up martial arts for the first time.
Q. What should I bring for the trial lesson?
Please bring sportswear (T-shirt and long pants), a towel, and a drink. Children can wear their school gym clothes. If you own a gi, you’re welcome to wear it, but it’s not required.
Q. Do I have to join after the trial?
No, it’s entirely optional. However, if you enroll during the trial period, the enrollment fee (¥15,000) is waived.
Q. Can parents and children try a lesson together?
Yes, absolutely. Please apply through the reservation form under the parent’s name and note “Trial with child (age ___)” in the comments. You can also simply message us on LINE saying “Parent-child trial.” The Saturday 1:30 PM class at the Shinagawa dojo is ideal for parent-child training.
Q. I’d like my child to learn Aikido
We offer a Junior class for elementary school students and above. We focus on helping children enjoy the dojo while developing manners, focus, and self-defense skills. Parent-child participation is also welcome.
Q. My foreign friend wants to join. Is that possible?
Of course. We can provide bilingual (Japanese/English) instruction upon request. Even for other languages, we can communicate through gestures. We also offer private lessons with English-only instruction.
Q. Can I participate if I train at another dojo or practice a different style?
You can participate as long as your home dojo doesn’t restrict training at other dojos. In that case, we ask that you train as a beginner on equal footing (please refrain from teaching techniques from other dojos to our students).
